Janis Lamberth

Washington, DC

Janis is a member of the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary. She has served in many positions during her time as a member and was President 1990-1991. She has served on many committees including the Membership Committee, Annual U.S. Supreme Court Justices’ Spouses Luncheon, Law Day and other activities. She has hosted the Holiday Happening at her home several times. She has even convinced her husband, The Honorable Royce Lamberth, to dress as Santa Claus, which was a huge hit with the attendees. She has been an active participant in almost all the events that NCLA has sponsored.

Her greatest, and certainly most important role has been her contribution as Treasurer of the organization for the past 25 years! NCLA has been most fortunate to have someone with integrity and ability to handle the position of treasurer. She has done so with grace and kindness even when it came to reminding members of forgotten dues or handling the paying of bills. She is truly one of a kind and NCLA has been very fortunate to have her as a member of the Board.

Shout-outs for Janis!

Anne Santorelli: Just to say that I am thrilled that Janis is receiving this award, but sad she will not be there to receive it. She has been all these years the backbone of NCLA in her capacity as Treasurer, and hopefully will continue in the roll for many years to come. She has also kept NCLA true to its purpose and kept it on track. It has also been great fun over the pandemic years and beyond to celebrate our Holiday Happening with her and Santa Royce!!

Hopefully her health problems will be solved quickly, and she can celebrate this award with her NCLA friends.

Pat Gill:  Janis was a dedicated member of Law Wives. Willing to help in every way. (Especially to remind me to pay my dues) 😇. Janis is a true friend to all she meets. Thank You Janis.

Marilyn Petry and Evelyn Albright: Congratulations to Janis Lamberth for being selected ALA’s Volunteer of the Year. As long-time treasurer of the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary (NCLA), we could always rely on Janis’ diligence and expertise. Working with Janis is a pleasure. This special recognition is well deserved.

Diane Harmon:  Janis Lamberth invited me to join the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary at a Judicial Conference in Hershey PA with her husband Royce Lamberth, Chief Judge of the US Court of Appeals. She was President of NCLA 1990-1991. Under her tutelage, I later served as President 2006-2007, then again in 2012-2013.

Janis’s stalwart approach to dealing with colleagues and friends and keeping NCLA’s finances in excellent condition as she served as the Treasurer of NCLA for over 25 years is remarkable.

Her care and concern for NCLA as it transitions to a social organization is admirable.

Janis and I have been friends for 2 decades, which I cherish.

Kathy Poetting

Des Moines, IA

Kudos to Kathy!

Darlene Brinkman: Kathy Poetting is our LAW of Polk County, Inc., Queen of Getting Things Done. She is a superlative planner of fundraising projects, coordinator of service projects and outstanding cheerleader for our organization. She generously contributes time, energy and money to support LAW’s philanthropic projects for women and children and LAW’s fund that awards scholarships to non-traditional law students who demonstrate a commitment to public service. Her fundraising accomplishments include planning and working at bazaars, department store Christmas gift wrapping, large garage sale, spring plant sale, baking and decorating cakes for a silent auction, making hundreds of decorated cupcakes and individually packaging them for sale at a community charity event, and conducting a project of painting crocks by LAW members for sale at a bazaar. Her activities with the organization have touched many lives. She organized, bought food and with LAW members made meals for 60 people living at the Ronald McDonald House during their children’s hospital stays about every six weeks for two years; bought craft materials and supplies for a Christmas cookie decorating party with LAW members and students with high needs behavior problems living at a congregate residence; assembled workshop packets for use by conflict resolution counselors in sessions with children; organized visits by LAW members to a nonprofit that provides services for domestic abuse prevention, teen programs, and early childhood development for a special time of reading and at Christmas she wrapped gifts from LAW members for the children; and organized a huge LAW Easter egg hunt for a group of children in residential care. The members of LAW of Polk County, Inc. love and admire Kathy for her inspiring leadership. We look forward to recognition of her outstanding volunteer efforts by American Lawyers Alliance.

"What immediately came to mind when thinking about Kathy’s contributions to LAW was the song from the musical Oklahoma, “I Can’t Say No” (she is someone who CAN’T say no!). She is a woman with many, many talents, endless energy and is always ready, willing, and very able to help in any way she can."

"None of us need wonder why Kathy was chosen: she has been a backbone of LAW for decades--doing every hard job there has been to do--with grace, punctuality, organization and humility. Thank you, Kathy, for your years of service and your friendship, and congratulations on a much deserved award!"

"I followed Kathy twice as her President-Elect, then became President. She was very persuasive to me about taking on the role, saying “we all help each other.” She was right----and she exemplified the person who helped out everyone else."

Evelyn Albright

McLean, VA

American Lawyers Alliance

In the 1970’s I joined the organization that is now known as the American Lawyers Alliance and served as Recording Secretary.

I was a Director 2015-2017 and 2018-2020 and 2nd Vice President 2017-2018.  I have served as Co-Chair of the ALA Auxiliary Support Program from 2016-Present.  It is a privilege to learn about the many civic, community out-reach programs throughout the U.S.A. that our auxiliaries are supporting to bring an understanding and appreciation of the American legal system, the Rule of Law, to students in our country.

National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary (NCLA)

In the 1970’s I participated as a Tour Leader and as Coordinator for NCLA members to give District of Columbia (D.C.) public school students tours of the D.C. Superior Court.  The tours included sitting in the courtroom listening to carefully selected cases.    I have served as Newsletter Editor and currently continue to serve as Co-Chair of NCLA’s annual Law Day Essay Contest for D.C.  5th/6th grade public school students.  The annual Award Ceremony is held at the U.S. Supreme Court.  I have been given the honor to serve as NCLA’s Co-President from 2009-2011 and from 2013-Present.  This year we launched a new program, the Wellness Program, focusing on Nutrition, Sleep and Stress Management.  The first presentation on March 10, 2021 will be on nutrition.

What People Are Saying About Evelyn

From Janet Bullinger:  Evelyn Albright has been the mainstay of NCLA for some years now.  If it were not for Evelyn and her co-president (some who have taken a less active role in NCLA) there would not be an NCLA.  She knows the forward and backwards working of this organization and although she has said she would not participate she has always stepped up and led the organization.  I truly mean it when I say that the group would not exist without her.  Some of us were involved but there are time constraints and people did their parts but gently left their positions but Evelyn has had a hand in all parts of the organization.  She has contacted and guided those persons doing out Annual Luncheon for the Supreme Court Justices Spouses, participated in the Law Day Contest at the U.S. Supreme Court and contacted people to take on positions of responsibility for the good of our group.  I sincerely believe that she deserves this award because no one had done more than Evelyn for the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary.

Kitty O’Reilley:  Evelyn Albright has been a member of the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary for many years.  She became more active after retiring from the government.  She has held the position of Co-President for several terms.  When NCLA was going through some difficult times, Evelyn stepped up and along with other women, became co-president.  She has continued in that role for several terms.  Several years ago, she took on the co-chairmanship of the Law Day Essay Contest and has hosted several ALA presidents as her guest at the Kenwood Country Club and during the ceremony at the Supreme Court of the United States.

As co-president, she has planned and organized for NCLA members to attend Holiday Happenings, Spring Flings and other events around the city.  She is very organized and gives a lot of her time to the organization.

As far as ALA is concerned, she has co-chaired the Auxiliary Support Awards for several years and has attended many of the ALA mid-year and annual meetings.

Anne Santorelli: Evelyn has been the consummate volunteer. From the moment she joined the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary (NCLA), she involved herself wholeheartedly in anything she was asked to do. Her main focus has been on the Law Day Essay contest and awards ceremony at the U.S. Supreme Court for Fifth Graders in the District of Columbia public schools.   This is a nine-month a year job.

She has also been co-president and co-commissioner of NCLA for many years,
keeping the organization ticking when it was going through some difficult times.  She has been the mainstay for making arrangements for the annual luncheon for the spouses of the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, which is why it is such a beautiful  event year after year.   In the American Lawyers Alliance (ALA)she has been the mainstay of the Auxiliary Support Awards, and always has the facts and figures on who has received funds, etc. at her finger tips!

She is quiet, knowledgeable and hard working, even through treatment for breast cancer a few years ago.  If you ask Evelyn to do something you will know that it willbe done in an efficient, quiet and excellent way.  This award is much deserved.

Alice Gordon  It is truly an honor to celebrate Evelyn  Albright as Outstanding Volunteer Award  for the American Lawyers Alliance .  Evelyn's dedication to her local auxiliary is impressive.  As a new member of her alliance in Washington D.C. I have seen first hand how she takes her responsibilities seriously.  She gives 100%.  She leads quietly, but with thoroughness to details in any program or projects she serves.

As President of her Capital Lawyers Auxiliary I attended her alliance and as a guest Evelyn was a most gracious hostess and marvelous hospitality in providing me comfort and lodging during my stay in Washington DC.  It was most memorable and greatly appreciated.  When Evelyn, as a member of the American Lawyers Alliance, served on the Grants committee, her dedication shone through. I truly appreciate what our local alliance has been able to do as a result of these grants including helping our  juvenile home and their library, or creating opportunities to learn job skills like the Young Chef's program and others.

Finally, Evelyn's adaptability during this Covid 19 epidemic to continue to provide interesting programs for her local alliance through virtual meetings including a Bingo game with winners and her most recent program featuring a nutritionist was remarkable and an example of what can be done.

A Little Q & A with Evelyn...

  • Evelyn, we all admire you in American Lawyers Alliance. You are always smiling and undertaking every task with such a thorough, fair manner —not to mention with such energy, and a positive outlook. I imagine you were a good student in your earlier years. Can you share a little bit about your educational and early background?

I look back to my early years with many fond memories of my family, my friends and other significant people and experiences.  I am very fortunate to have had as role models and leaders persons, especially my parents, who taught me respect for my country and respect and acceptance of others.  My parents embraced civics and reaching out to others as a natural part of our lives.  Reaching back to my time as an elementary school student, a warm and special memory is my weekly visits to the Washington Home, then known as the Home for the Incurables, in Washington, D.C. I was asked to read to an interesting and frail bedridden lady.   During my visits we talked about many subjects, I read to her from her favorite books, and over time, we bonded  and developed a close relationship each week looking forward to the next visit and to reading the next chapter in her chosen book.

  • And you and George live in the beautiful Washington, D.C. area, such an important and vibrant part of our country. What do you enjoy most about living in this area?

I grew up in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area .  I have special memories of enjoying and learning from the many and diverse cultural opportunities offered by the D.C. area.  These include attending performances at the National Theatre, Wolf Trap, Signature Theatre, Arena Stage, the National Symphony, the national Zoo, Dumbarton Oakes, the National Gallery, the Smithsonian to name but a very few.  George and I love our time at home together and with our family and, until the Pandemic, would take several vacations throughout the year together and as a family.  We look forward once again to being able to travel safely with plans to visit two of our favorite places — Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, and Amelia Island, Florida.

  • When did you join the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary? And what have been the highlights of your involvement in this very outstanding organization?

The organization now known as the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary  (NCLA) was  founded January 26, 1961.  NCLA is indeed an “outstanding organization” of exceptional, talented and dedicated  members.  I was asked to join the organization in the 1970’s.  My membership in NCLA is significant in my life.

Some of the programs in which I participated were:  NCLA’s program to give D.C. Public School students tours of the D.C. Superior Court.  The tours included sitting in the courtroom listening to carefully selected cases.   In addition to setting up the tours, I also was one of the NCLA tour guides.

I have served as NCLA Newsletter Editor,  and am  Co-Chair of NCLA’s 45-year-strong Annual  Law Day Essay Contest for D.C.  5th and 6th  grade public school students. The annual Award  Ceremony for this civics outreach program is, by tradition, held at the United States Supreme Court. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s program had to be modified.  I was Co-Chair of NCLA’s Annual Luncheon in honor of The Spouses of the United States Supreme Court Justices.   I have been given the honor to serve as NCLA’s Commissioner/Co-President from 2009-2011 and from 2013-Present.  This year NCLA launched a new program, the Wellness Program, focusing on Nutrition, Sleep management, Stress Management and Movement.  The first presentation on March 10, 2021 featured nutrition with a zoom presentation by Caroline Prieskorn, registered and licensed Dietitian Nutritionist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

  • So, involvement in your local auxiliary, as is true for most of us, led to an interest in American Lawyers Alliance? When did you first join the ALA Board of Directors? And how would you describe your first impressions and what specific involvement you have had in ALA?

In the 1970’s I joined the organization that is now known as the American Lawyers Alliance.  I have held several Board positions including  Recording Secretary and am currently 2nd Vice President.  Since 2016,  I have served as Co-Chair of the ALA Auxiliary Support Awards.  It is a privilege to learn  about the many civics, community out-reach programs throughout the U.S.A. that our auxiliaries are supporting, which is spreading a greater understanding and appreciation of the American legal system and the Rule of Law.

I am grateful and appreciative to all the many wonderful people, old friends and new,  with whom I have shared so many special times and from whom I have learned a lot.  Thank you, American Lawyers Auxiliary for bestowing the honor of being selected  2021 Volunteer of the Year.  I look forward to many, many more years supporting the missions of the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary and the American Lawyers Alliance.

2018

Gina Rebman
Houston, Texas
Today you will learn why my local auxiliary, the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary (which we call the HBAA), wanted the ALA to select GINA REBMAN for the ALA Lifetime Achievement Award.

I searched the Internet for the qualities that make up being a great volunteer. I want to list those qualities and tell you how Gina fits into each category.

ENERGETIC   Gina can find the positive spirit to motivate others to take action towards her cause. She shows up when called upon. As someone said, Gina is our rock. One of our HBAA members described Gina as a tireless volunteer.

Many of you know Carmela Frels. Carmela sent me her comments about why Gina is appreciated. “In 1984, my mother was dying, when Gina called out of the blue, offering her help. At the time, I was the Houston Junior Forum’s Raffle Ticket Chair. All tickets and monies had to be deposited, stubs entered into the drawing, and every ticket mailed to members properly tracked. It was a detailed, time-consuming job, and it was terrible time for me to have it.”

“Gina knew I was overwhelmed. I couldn’t believe her kindness. That is the word that epitomizes Gina: Kind. She helped me. I have never forgotten her selflessness, sensitivity, and willingness to work the many days she came to my home. Thirty-four years later, she is still the same person. Through the years, Gina has taken on many tasks in the organizations to which we both belong, giving of herself over and over again. Gina is the example of what we should all aspire to be. Plus, Gina is a loving spouse to John.”

FLEXIBLE   Gina might be picking up big boxes of booklets and driving her car to deliver them to schools all over Houston. She might put on her apron one day and cook chili for the HBAA Chili Cook-Off or she might make a pie for the pie contest at the Cook-Off. Then again, you might find Gina sitting for hours reading essays about crime that 6th and 7th grade students write for the Do the Write Thing program. Gina is a very important supporter of all HBAA projects.

RELIABLE and COMMITTED   Gina has been an active member of the HBAA for over 40 years. She supports the HBAA by having chaired most of the projects sponsored by the HBAA and attending all of our luncheons and parties. To support the HBAA, Gina is also a member of the Texas Lawyers Auxiliary and she is a member of the American Lawyers Alliance.

UNSELFISH The HBAA members made comments about Gina. You often read them saying, NO is not a word that Gina knows. Gina Rebman is the first to bring food, the first to offer her home for a meeting, and the first to check people into an event. No task is too small or too big for Gina Rebman to handle.

Wendy Dawson who is a past HBAA President, says “Gina is one of the most gracious people I have known, kind, caring, and with a patient tenacity that gets things done in a calm and efficient manner. Her leadership and devotion to the many facets of HBAA are admirable and so very much appreciated. She has a smile and kind word every time you see her. She makes everyone and every project feel important. I am so delighted she is being recognized for her countless hours and selfless donations of her time”.
PASSIONATE  Gina does not merely volunteer for high visibility jobs. Often she is in the background doing the thankless and unglamorous jobs that help the HBAA to thrive. Last year the HBAA recognized Gina Rebman as such an extraordinary volunteer worthy of the HBAA Lifetime Achievement Award. That award has been granted only ten times during the 70 year history of the HBAA.

TEAM PLAYER  Gina is part of the HBAA in every aspect of the organization. You can read in the HBAA booklet all the many projects in which she has been officially involved. She works with each and all of us in the HBAA to make a difference. If we had more people like Gina in our organizations, we could make all the darkness light. A team that includes Gina will achieve something wonderful.

Truly, Gina Rebman is one of those rare individuals who, the longer you know her, the more you will appreciate the depth and richness of her life. She quietly goes about quietly performing her good works, not only in the HBAA, but also in her church and in her community at large.

Janet Bullinger
Washington, D. C.
Member of the National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary and American Lawyers Alliance
The National Capital Lawyers Auxiliary (NCLA) would not be what it is today without Janet’s willingness to step up and volunteer to do whatever was asked of her – and more.

Janet has faithfully served as president, co-commissioner, and co-president. She has been newsletter editor, chaired a variety of committees, planned outings for the organization, arranger reservations, hosted name of the visiting ALA presidents when they visited Washington D.C., for either Law Day or the luncheon for spouses of the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States.

ALA members have had opportunities to try new restaurants and visit many sights we have loved in the cities where we meet. If it had not been for Janet, we would have greatly missed all the fun and laughs we have had together. She has done a fantastic job year after year as travel co-chair for ALA.

In addition, she served as ALA’s Second Vice-President in 2013-2014 and ALA Nominating Chair in 2011-2012.

For ten years she has given lectures and guided tours, as a Supreme Court docent, leading visitors from all over the world throughout the Supreme court she knows so well.

All members of NCLA and ALA know that Janet is a “whirlwind” when it comes to arranging activities for their enjoyment, However, she also uses those same attributes in other venues. For example, she was instrumental in helping form a “village” in her neighborhood. This is an an organization consisting of residents in the area, who can call someone if they require assistance – such as transportation to the doctor or if they have an emergency. She is also treasurer of the Widowed Person OutreachProgram at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Professionally, Janet was a legal assistant in Washington, DC law firms. She used her biology major to focus on medical malpractice cases and insurance defense work relating to Agent orange, asbestos, and other environmental issues. The Supreme Court hired her as a legal assistant in the Reporter of Decisions Office where she proofed and fire-checked drafts of decisions, and reviewed opinions.
