“We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution” - Teacher & Coach
Now in its 31st year, the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution competition, similar to a congressional hearing, is sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and involves entire classes making presentations and answering questions on constitutional topics from judges around the state. Students analyze current and past Supreme Court cases, legislation, and executive orders throughout their research as well as law reviews on the
various topics of constitutional law. Teams are judged on opening statements and their ability to answer follow-up questions from a panel of judges.

Model Congress – Advisor
Model Congress presents a unique opportunity for high school students to engage with American government through role-play and simulation in order to develop a better understanding of civic involvement and government function. Through a variety of congressional committees covering a broad spectrum of pressing federal issues and a diverse collection of Special Program committees highlighting other aspects of the US government, Model Congress strives to provide a stimulating learning environment that fosters individual growth and group education. The club started with 8 students in the fall of March 2014 and now has over 60 active members.

iChange Capstone Project – Teacher/Creator
Students will investigate a problem in their local, state or federal community and develop solutions based on their
research. Students will need to interview experts and local citizenry and analyze and present data. In the end, students will write a letter to their representative and create a documentary outlining the issue, their research and their proposed solutions. This is the capstone project for the social studies department. This program was adapted by me from the Project Citizen program through the Center for Civic Education in the spring of 2011. Since then, I have modified the program to include more technology and a documentary feature at the end. In the spring of 2015, I piloted Trumbull High’s first iChange Film Festival in which the senior class was able to view the Top Five documentaries from the year and choose an overall best documentary winner.
